Blog 5: Increasing Returns & Red Queens


My daughter used her Netflix account to obtain “Paycheck” but due to some technical issues, she was unable to download, instead had to pick up the DVD from Blockbuster.  This is one example of the DVD continuing to have a presence in the marketplace.  Normally, downloading the video from Netflix would have been the optimal choice, saving travel time and purchase cost. 

Whether the competition between DVDs and video-on-demand should be viewed as an example of either Increasing Returns or Red Queens, one must examine both concepts and then determine: if the two technologies are competing against each other or did the two technologies reach the marketplace simultaneously.  If the technologies are competing with each other and one is trying to stay ahead of the other, then it is said to be a Red Queen.  If the two technologies reach the marketplace at the same time and one locked in market share, then it is considered Increasing Returns.   Technologies need to be accepted in order to have an impact, and the rate of acceptance is based on many factors, only some of which relate to the quality and capabilities of the technology itself” (Thornburg, 2008, p. 3).

We know that the DVD reached the marketplace in the mid 90’s, locked in market share, was very expensive, but enjoyed a significant presence for quite a while.  Dr. Thornburg opined that when a Red Queen emerges, it can have a disruptive impact on the competition.  Since Video-on-Demand emerged in 1998, is competing against an existing technology (DVD) for market share and has not quite yet locked in market share, I consider it to be a Red Queen.  Anderson posited that DVD reached critical mass in 1998, a year later critical price drops, but had not reached displacement or free availability.  Eventually, the DVD loses its market share and will soon be commodified (Anderson, 2004).  However, even though displaced in the market, due to the digital nature of the DVDs, they will continue to have a presence in homes.

Video-on-demand has many of the attributes of McLuhan Law: enhances quick access to viewing choices, obsolesces DVD purchase, retrieves old movies not on DVD, and reverses media technology usages.

Disruptive Powers of Second Life


The disruptive powers of Second Life, a 3-dimensional virtual world reality where through the use of free client programs or viewers, second life users (residents) create avatars to interact with each other, have impacted the lives of people worldwide.  Dr. Thornburg (2009) posited that new technologies are always susceptible to unanticipated ‘wild card’ disruptive technologies.  Dr. Thornburg further opined that Second Life is disruptive technology to real life.   However, keep in mind that it is not the technology that makes it disruptive but the impact that the technology makes.   Businesses and universities are using Second Life to attract younger students and younger clientele.   The reason why people are claiming that Second Life has such potential at being a disruptive technology is that it radically shifts how and where people can interact socially.

Second Life replaced traditional environment such as Game Cube, Sega Genesis, and Atari that people interacted in. Through Second Life world people attend classes, meetings, visit stores, colleges, universities, and parties.    To answer the question, how many years before Second Life will be replaced by another disruptive technology or emerging technology, look at its track record.   Linden Lab released Second Life in 2003, “while other worlds, including open source environments have launched since then, Second Life remains the largest general-purpose virtual world--with its own currency, Linden dollars, which can be used to buy, rent, or trade land and goods” (Campus Technology, 2011).  Over 1 million people log into Second Life, generating nearly $75 million annually.   As long as Second Life provides its residents with endless imagination and unexpected surprises, it most likely will continue to be enhanced and improved with newer features instead of being replaced.  


 The social benefits of Second Life are visible in higher learning institutes use of virtual worlds to provide signage and marketing material that showcase their campuses and disseminate recruiting information to students and parents.    University of Delaware, Montclair State University (NJ),  and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, are just a few examples of schools that use Second Life for automated/virtual tours and faculty projects that teaches concepts and engages students in the process.  As a social 3D media, Second Life also enhances the social skills among its participants.

Rhymes of History



Thornburg (2008) opined that the rhymes of history are the affect or impact of new development rekindling something from the past.  While it is true that history does not repeat itself, but as Mark Twain posited it does rhyme.   In the 20th century, we have witnessed the emergence of technology that replaces or obsoletes another technology.  McLuhan tetrad implies that technology by virtue of being introduced sets the stage for its’ own demise or replacement.  

 Digital communications and widespread access to telecommunications and cable networks is a great example of technology that represents the force of a rhyme of history. The embedded technology retrieved from past channels of communication connects to recurring themes of history, via the internet.  The internet extended our communication connections globally, to people and places, via a variety of communication and internet options: social networks, instant message applications, scream casting and interactive learning resources, collaboration resources, wiki sites, video and podcasting resources, music and smartphones. All of these new technologies retrieve from preexisting technologies that were enjoyed in the past.  Interestingly, the internet is the most common mode of communication that connects us globally to the most frequently used channels of communication.     

 In many ways our lives have become codependent on the internet as suggested by Kevin Kelly.
Merchants have experienced new ways to attract customers to their merchandise via the use of e-commerce.  Emergent technology that has rekindled what was once diminishing catalog businesses for some, and new opportunities for others, into profitable online shopping mall experiences for consumers that range from appliances ordered and delivered to groceries from the supermarkets, without even leaving the comforts of home.

Religious groups are also taking advantage of the affects of the technology by replacing what was once tape only ministry with stream casting and televised messages to help spread the Gospel.

Module 2 Tetrad: Electric Cars




The airwaves have been buzzing about the 2013 hybrid drive electric car. In an age where gas prices continues to soar upward, many motorists are looking to replace gas and diesel fueled cars. Electric cars promise zero emission, quiet, clean, eco-friendly, stylish good looks, high-tech amenities, and aerodynamic engineering and driving performances. To prepare for the addition of electric cars on the streets of our city, the downtown business district has added additional charging stations. 

 


Energent technology provided an interactive LCD screens that monitor information and provides feedback on driving style.  Volt for example is programmed with 4 driving modes: Normal mode --enable Volt to drive like a conventional car but with more efficiency; Sport mode-- provide aggressive feedback and heighten response; Mountain mode—provides a power reserve for climbing long, steep grades, a newly added feature, Hold mode—holds battery charge in reserve. 

Regenerative braking is another feature that captures some of the energy lost during braking and converts it to electricity stored in the battery.

Mobile apps also allow the driver to control and customize many other features of Volt.  OnStar Remotel Link apps allow the driver to check charging status, battery level, and charging mode via smartphones.  Text and email alerts the driver to when the battery is fully charged or if there’s a charge interruption.
Automobile technology has evolved since the gasoline engine (1870) and the diesel engine (1890).   The electric car is yet another emergent technology.

EDUC 8848 Emerging & Future Technologies

•Identify a current technology that has emerged in the last few years that shapes learning or productivity in your industry.     

In 2011, advances in tablet computers ignited the imagination of educators nationwide.  The success of iPad, in the fourth quarter of 2011 peaked at more than 3 million units a month, in comparison to Samsung Galaxy and Sony’s Tablet S in a rapidly growing new market.  Tablets, distinctly different from tablet PCs, have come to be viewed as not just a new category, but indeed a new emerging technology that blends features of laptops, smartphones, and earlier tablet computers with always-connected Internet, and thousands of apps personalizing the computing experience (Horizon 2012  Report). 

Tablets portability, large display, and touch screen, makes them ideal devices for one-to-one learning, as well as fieldwork.   Learning institutions are beginning to rely on them in place of cumbersome laboratory equipment, video equipment, and various other expensive tools not nearly as portable or as inexpensive to replace.  Tablets growing number of features, gives traction to other educational technologies—from facilitating real-time data mining to offering a plethora of game-based apps.

What problems or challenges have been associated with this technology?

As these new devices gain more popularity, and are adopted by the majority, their independency will make them standout from other mobile devices, such as smartphones, e-readers, or tablet PCs.  Their larger screens and richer gestured-based interfaces makes them ideal tools and visually compelling for sharing content, videos, images, and presentations, in addition to their portability.   

 •What societal need does it meet, and what are its benefits?

The societal needs that the tablet meets is its ability to serve as a video player with instant access to libraries of contents, digital readers, newsstands for magazines and new subscriptions with a mere touch.  Real-time two-way video phones, sharable photo viewers and cameras, easy email and web browsers; and rich, full-featured game platforms — all in a slim, lightweight, portable package that fits in a purse or briefcase — but which significantly omits a traditional keyboard.     When the iPad was introduced, it was described as a “lean back” experience as contrasted to the “lean forward” experience of typical computers.   One of the great benefits of this innovation is how they are used: a swipe, a tap, or a pinch allows users to interact with the device in completely new ways that are intuitive and simple.  They require no manuals or instructions. 

The Horizon 2012 Report stated that the tablet itself encourages exploration of its capabilities, simply by placing the device in the hands of a small child.  A custom-configured keyboard can be purchased for those must have.  Screen technology has already advanced to the point that tablets are exceptionally effective in displaying content such as photographs, books, and videos.  What makes tablets so powerful is that students already use these or very similar devices outside the classroom to download apps, connect to their social networks, and immerse themselves in informal learning experiences. The rate of adoption for the tablet is almost assured by the fact that students are already quite comfortable using similar devices in both academic and social settings.

Chemistry. Students also use the iPads throughout the chemistry courses to clarify experiment set-up and answer other procedural questions.  http://www.go.nmc.org/hjjvi

 Solar-Powered iPad Devices--In partnership with Apple, the Zimbabwe government is bringing solar-powered iPad devices to rural institutions across Africa that have not had consistent — or any — computer access in the past due to lack of electricity. http://www.go.nmc.org/ctjzq

 The iPad Replaces University Textbooks--The University of Adelaide will replace textbooks with Apple iPads for first year students in its Science program. What would make this technology even better, avoiding the pitfalls you identified?

Perhaps what makes this technology great, is the fact that its pattern after the mobile phone.  Both iOS and Android-based tablets were designed with the app model in mind and with hundreds of thousands of specialized apps available to extend the functionality of the tablet.   Apps that have many features in common with mobile apps, allows for more detailed interfaces or viewing area.  Additionally, apps for tablets are inexpensive and very easy to add to the device, using same tools and online stores as mobile apps use.
